While scouring the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come across the most terrifying life form in the universe. [Last updated August 14, 2024] Director Fede Alvarez turned to the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used whenever possible to help ground the later visual effects work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all of their blood hangs in the air in long, blurry patterns.

Real-life zero gravity causes liquids to form into spherical shapes, not spread out in long, flat clumps like in the movie. Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and becomes ominous, much like in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene. The logo itself suffers a burst of static and turns green.

The Death of Theaters – The Real BBC @MauLer @HeelvsBabyface (2024). Alien: Romulus offers a gritty experience reminiscent of the original film, with impressive world-building and familiar technology that longtime fans of the franchise will appreciate. The film captures the essence of the Alien universe, offering a self-contained story that fits well within the established timeline and cleverly references Prometheus. However, the film’s reliance on callbacks to previous entries in the franchise detracts from its originality.
We’ve seen it before – another Ripley
While some references are clever, others are forced and awkward. The introduction of main character Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny, feels uninspired. In fact, it’s David Jonsson’s character Andy who ends up being the most interesting by far. If there’s one franchise that would benefit from exploring new characters rather than rehashing old ones, it’s this one.
Despite these downsides, Romulus is technically impressive
It’s beautifully shot, the effects are good, it has some genuine scares, and it manages to deliver solid thrills and action scenes that are sure to please. I just wish it was brave enough to carve out its own identity. The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of the month.
